Who is it for?

This expedition is for those who want to experience the Sahara fully — not from the edge. Walk across dunes, share stories around the campfire, sleep beneath endless skies, and move at a pace that lets you notice the land.

No prior expedition experience is needed — just curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to fully immerse yourself.

You’ll return with a refreshed sense of perspective and a deeper connection to the wild.

For anyone who doesn’t want to be a tourist, but an explorer — someone who travels with respect for nature and the people who call the place home - Sandra, The Sahara Expedition 2026

What to Expect

Wild Globe expeditions go far beyond sightseeing. Expect remote desert trekking, camping wild under the stars and learning real desert skills along the way.

This trip is built with guides who come from nomadic heritage and know the Sahara intimately. Years of experience and close ties with local communities let you see the desert authentically.

It’s challenging, off the tourist trail, and unforgettable – leaving you inspired, with perspective, and a lasting connection to the desert.

It’s not for everyone — and that’s intentional. For those who join us, the experience consistently earns 5-star feedback.

This trek is suitable for most people with a moderate fitness level, good stamina and positive attitude to challenge. You should be prepared to walk around 20 km each day.

Your kit will be carried by a camel caravan. The camels are there to carry kit and we do not allow them to be ridden.

This trek runs in the winter months to avoid the intense heat of the summer. Daytime temperatures are around 20°c but with limited shade. Nights can drop to 0°C.

Your expedition will be led by an experienced expedition leader and local guide with strategies in place to deal with any incidents that may occur.

We make every effort to minimise risks through meticulous planning and preparation.

Please read the risk awareness page so you can understand the risks associated with this expedition.

You will need to fly into Agadir (AGA). The first night of the trip is in a nearby hotel and from there we will transfer you to the start of the trek.

You’ll trek with Amazigh and Sahrawi guides — among the last generation to have grown up in the desert before the decline of nomadic life. Following in their footsteps, you’ll share traditional food, stories, songs, and games around the campfire — the desert’s oldest form of connection.

Respect for this fragile ecosystem underpins everything we do. We follow a strict leave-no-trace policy: no hunting, no trapping, no unnecessary resource use. Camps areas are left spotless, fire scars are covered, and natural materials are used only under guidance for sustainable harvesting.

Water is scarce, so we transport only what is essential and minimise single-use plastics. Group sizes are small to reduce impact.

By working with local guides and paying agreed fair wages, this expedition supports livelihoods, preserves traditional desert skills, and contributes to the regional economy in a meaningful way.

FAQ

How challenging is this?

Our expeditions are designed to both challenge you and reignite your sense of wonder. We intentionally avoid the main tourist routes — many of which are vehicle-accessible — so for large sections of the journey you’ll see little to no sign of other people. This is genuine, remote wilderness.

Reaching this level of self-sufficiency is deeply rewarding, but it does require physical effort.

On trekking days, you can expect 4–6 hours of hiking, covering approximately 20km. Terrain may include rough ground or soft sand, and there is often limited shade from the sun.

There will be stretches of moderately strenuous effort balanced with easier, more relaxed walking. You may experience moments of discomfort — heat during the day, cooler temperatures at night — alongside moments where everything feels calm, simple, and profoundly still.

That contrast is part of the alchemy of real adventure. Challenge and ease, effort and reward — combining to create a strong sense of accomplishment and stories that stay with you long after you return home.

Mornings are generally fresh and cool, warming to around 20°C as the sun rises. Skies are usually clear and rain is extremely rare.

Evenings cool quickly after sunset, so warm layers are essential. Overnight temperatures can drop to around 0°C, making a good sleeping bag and appropriate clothing important for comfort.

You’ll need stamina, general fitness, and, most importantly, a positive attitude toward challenge. If you’re not usually active, some preparation before the expedition — especially getting used to trekking on consecutive days — will help you enjoy the experience more.

The adventure includes five full trekking days of 4–6 hours each, plus a half-day at the end, covering a total distance of around 100 km. Maintaining a slow, steady pace makes it easier to adjust to the desert environment.

The trek is supported by a camel caravan that transports the bulk of your equipment from camp to camp, making the journey achievable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. For the welfare of the camels, riding them is not permitted.

During the expedition, you’ll sleep in a twin-share tent (single supplements are available). Each tent comes with a sleeping mat and some warm blankets, but we recommend bringing a sleeping bag, as desert temperatures can drop significantly at night.

The desert skies are spectacular — we encourage everyone to spend at least one night under the stars to experience this unique wonder.

Water is a precious and limited resource in the desert. You’ll need to bring wet wipes for personal hygiene, while we provide water for handwashing as needed. At the midway point of the trek, each participant will have access to a basin of water for a “birdbath” (flannel wash).

Our toilet system is a traditional wilderness method: a trench dug into the ground at a discreet distance from camp. It’s straightforward, hygienic, and managed responsibly in line with Leave No Trace principles.

Once in the desert, we encourage you to embrace the rare opportunity for a true digital detox. While there may be occasional pockets of signal during the trek, we suggest using the time to fully switch off and immerse yourself in the environment.

Before departure, your loved ones can be given emergency contact details. Your expedition leader will check known signal points for any important messages and has communication plans in place for emergencies.

If you’d like to keep devices charged, bring a power bank or spare batteries. Portable solar chargers can also be useful, though efficiency may vary depending on sun exposure.

WiFi is available at the hotel at the start and finish of the expedition, but there will be no access while trekking through the desert.

The desert is surprisingly rich in both wildlife and plant life. With a little patience, a keen eye, and guidance from our expert local guides, you may spot some truly fascinating creatures.

At dawn, look for tracks of small nocturnal mammals near camp, such as the large-eared fennec fox and the tiny, kangaroo-like jerboa. During trekking, you might encounter Dorcas gazelle, an endangered species whose numbers are increasing in Iriqui National Park. Addax antelope have also been recently reintroduced in the park.

Birdsong often breaks the desert silence, with sandgrouse, larks, and wheatears calling across the dunes. Keep an eye out for the Berber skink — also known as the sandfish for the way it appears to “swim” through the sand.

You’ll trek alongside a local guide with exceptional expertise in wildlife spotting and desert ecology. They’ll help you identify species and teach you how to observe and interact safely with the desert’s remarkable inhabitants.
